05/09/07: My first con (KHAN!)
Posted by: Philip Kolba
FanExpo ran the weekend of August 24-26 and it was the first con I attended. I didn't know what to expect but I was surprised by the amount of fun I had. I like comics — which might be evident by the fact that I edit a graphic art magazine — but I never figured I liked them enough to attend a comic con. But as editor of Squid & Ink not only do I see a con as a place to geek out, but also as an opportunity to find subscribers, recruit artists and impress potential advertisers. That's the official reason.
Honestly, the biggest draw for me was learning that Adam West was attending FanExpo. Our impressions were that Adam West has the absurd sense of humour — "My god, I'm a tomato!" — to appreciate what we're trying to accomplish with Squid & Ink. So we sewed him a Mayor Adam West squid dressed up as the original Batman and presented it to him.
We also met Malcolm McDowell at the con. We didn't have time to sew him a Clockwork Orange squid — we're working on one now for next time — but we did manage to get a photo of him with Duncan the squid.
There were many talented comic authors at FanExpo and we tried to speak to as many of them as possible. Check out their work, which is linked below. If you especially like any artists, email them and suggest that they submit their work to us — in fact, do that with all your favourite comic authors.

In my next entry: Mayor Adam West meets his squid. Adam West's agent didn't allow us to take any photos, so we captured the event in comic form.
